Post Funeral Grief

Dad Loss

Hi,

I lost my dad in April. I am 27, he was 61 and died suddenly and unexpectedly. It’s my first parent to have passed, but I have lost grandparents whom I was very close to so have experienced real grief before.

In the immediate aftermath I felt surprisingly like it didn’t affect me. I put this down to losing my grandfather last year, and being sort of ‘warmed up’ to the idea of death and how to deal with it.

Well, that’s not the case. As with the other deaths, the ‘post funeral’ weeks are the hardest. I feel as though grief really *starts* after the funeral, for me. I don’t know why.

All the support disappears. All the extended family who fussed over you sort of retreat back to the shadows. Friends care less. But the pain increases. So it’s gotten doubly hard.

I think each death is a brand new feeling and losing a parent at an age I would consider young has definitely been the one leaving me feeling the most empty.

Just thought I’d rant anyway. Hope everyone is well :)
