Henderson Flat Rd (Forest Road 181)
We recently drove Henderson Flat Road (Forest Road 181) in the Prescott National Forest, and it turned out to be a rugged, engaging drive that kept us locked in the whole way.
This is a 13-mile out-and-back that takes you right to the edge of the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness, and the whole drive keeps you on your toes. It’s rough, bumpy, and definitely feels like you’re out there, but overall, it wasn’t nearly as difficult as we remembered from our first run back in 2023. There are minimal obstacles, and even the one tight hairpin turn was no problem for our 20-foot Unimog, which honestly surprised us a bit.
There are quite a few areas that burned in (what we assume was) the Raffael Fire in 2021, and the trees are still scorched. But it’s making a comeback! And of course the cabin is always a cool stop.
One thing that has changed since we last ran it back in 2023, the parking area has been moved, and there’s now a gate set farther back from the wilderness boundary than before. Just something to keep in mind if you’ve done this trail in the past or are planning your route.
We ended up finding an awesome camp spot out there and spent some time exploring deeper into Sycamore Canyon, which never disappoints. That area alone makes the drive worth it.
Overall, this trail was a blast, and we’d 100% go back again. Curious if anyone else has driven it recently? Did it feel easier to you too? Not sure if conditions have mellowed out over time or if we’ve just leveled up a bit since our early off-road days.
