Dentist pricing and recommendation?

I am trying to find a new dentist in town after a negative experience with my former dentist.

I signed up for an initial appointment with a new dentist, they X-rayed my teeth, examined them and cleaned them up, fair service, but it ran $650 bucks.

Is that about right for a first time customer, initial exam, X-rays and cleaning?

I pay cash, no dental insurance.

If that seems high, who does your dental work? Happy with them? Reasonable price?

How often do you get a cleaning? Once a year? Every 6 months?
