(Spoilers all) Freeing ceremony theory
This theory is probably fairly obvious and has been discussed before, but i'm not very up to date on everything so I thought I'd post it anyway. So the freeing involves killing near-halo drafters with a knife before they can become wights. And the blinder's knife has some ability to undo the effect of breaking the halo, to convert wights back into normal drafters. Could the original freeing ceremony have involved using the blinder's knife to do just that? "Freeing" drafters from being controlled by the pagan gods after breaking the halo?
At some point the technique to using the blinder's knife this way must have been lost. At which point they converted the freeing ceremony to one where they simply kill wights, and then one where they kill drafters before they become wights. They must have somehow repressed knowledge of the original form of the ceremony, which seems like a huge task but it's something the chromeria has been demonstrated to do before, for example they eliminated paryl and chi drafters and now most people don't even know that paryl and chi can be drafted. (As a tangent, it's implied that magisters and such are allowed to discuss paryl at least amongst themselves, but I don't think there's a single scene where gavin thinks about paryl or chi or tries to draft it.)
