Theory and hear me out. S1 Spoilers ahead
I’m a bit sad we didn’t get the campus wide hands off law. I’m trying hard not to complain but it’s the one thing that’s in my heart that’s bothering me… like why😭but I actually loved S1 and I know they changed the breakup by making it Garrett breaking up with Hannah instead of the whole Phil threatening Hannah to break up with Garrett situation from the book so that couldn’t be implemented with that law since it won’t make sense but then… this is what I’m thinking about now…
We know Phil Graham is not out of the picture. They never fully closed out the abuse storyline with Cindy AND Garrett and to me it felt unfinished on purpose. (Or it’s dogshit writing because hello we need a better conclusion) We still have Phil, Cindy, Garrett, and Hannah all connected in this mess. That feels intentional to me
So what if they’re saving the Phil threatening Hannah storyline for S2 instead? Like is it possible?? Especially since Garrett is having this identity crisis with hockey rn (which is another issue I have because book GG wasn’t like that but let’s ignore it) so it could make Phil threaten Hannah even more and try to make her stay away from Garrett?
They already said in interviews that H&G are not going anywhere and that they’ll both still have storylines next season. So if Phil is still in the picture, I could totally see him threatening Hannah and forcing her to break up with Garrett to “protect him” and want him “focused” when he gets back to hockey
And if that happened, we could finally get the “How was your break baby?” “Don’t you baby me!” scene because Garrett would know they’re still in love and that whatever excuse she’s giving him is complete bullshit. And he fights for her. (bonus points if they keep put hands off law here and he can admit this time he DID DO the off campus hands off law and is unapologetic about it) Idk guys maybe I’m in the 5 stages of grief😂 they could just forget the law since they already butchered it but still yes for everything else. I wanted it tho!
Tbh I think it would work even better in S2 than it would have in S1. Their breakup in S1 felt more realistic and grounded than the original dramatic romcom version from the book. Stretching this plot into another season gives the relationship more weight and also gives them a chance to finally finish the Phil and Cindy storyline properly
Atp I genuinely can’t tell if I’m just in the denial stage and they completely swapped out the breakup storyline without planning to revisit it at all… or if there’s actually a chance they’re saving parts of it for S2. (Their breakup in the show was good. It was actually realistic and emotional. But I need the romcom version now in S2 for book reasons)
And I know I know, they just got their happy ending. But this is a good mini conflict that has some cuteness in it. I just loved that part in the book where Garrett was so sure of his love for Hannah and was calling out her BS and was cocky about it. He really gave off marry me tomorrow energy
What do you think? Am I reaching or does this actually make sense?
