I was 20 something, in a city I never chose, wearing heels that weren’t mine. That is where I found out who I was.

I did not choose this life the way most people choose things. It chose me, the way most important things do, in a moment I was not prepared for, in a city I never planned to be in, wearing shoes that were never meant for what I used to them for.

Let me back up.

I ended up in Miami the way some women end up in places they never planned to be. Not by choice. I had escaped one situation only to find myself in another, riding in a ruby red Rolls Royce under club neon lights, ignoring every flag that was waving directly at my face because I was young and the car was beautiful and sometimes that is enough to make you get in.

By the time I understood what was happening I was in Miami. And somehow, despite everything, I landed on my feet. I got accepted to work at one of the best clubs in the city. A club the other girls could not get into. That part still makes me smile.

I was working one night when a man walked in. Unremarkable. Nothing about him suggested what was about to happen. The other girls, the ones who did not give anything away for free, happily handed him to me. That alone should have told me something. These women were not generous. They were strategic.

I went to the back with him.

He was not there for what men usually come for.
He told me he would give me a significant amount of money. But I had to hurt him. Badly. He wanted me to kick him, as hard as I could, with my pleaser heels still on.

I said no.

I meant it when I said it.

But then something shifted. I thought about everything I had been carrying. Being taken somewhere against my will. Being unloved in ways that leave marks you cannot see. The particular exhaustion of surviving things you never talk about because talking about them makes them more real.

I caved.

And what came out of me was not cruelty. It was years of pent up rage that had never had anywhere to go finally finding an exit that made sense. For the first time in as long as I could remember, I was not the one absorbing something. I was the one delivering it. On my terms. With my body. And he was grateful.

I did not understand it at first.

But I felt it. The shift. The power. The strange and specific satisfaction of being completely in control of what happened in that room.

Shortly after that night I met the owner of the club. He made me an offer that had nothing to do with dancing. He put me up at the Ritz Carlton on South Beach for seven months.

And somewhere between the pleaser heels and the Ritz Carlton, I discovered who I actually was.

That was the beginning.

What matters more is the moment I feel the shift in the room. The breath held in anticipation. The shoulders finally dropping.

I have been chasing that feeling ever since a man in Miami showed me what I was capable of.

I do not think he knew what he was starting.
