PCOS is now PMOS!
PCOS may no longer tell the full story.
Some experts are now proposing the term PMOS — Polyendocrine metabolic Ovarian Syndrome.
Why? Because for many women, it’s not just about ovarian cysts.
PCOS can involve a much broader network of dysfunction affecting:
• Insulin resistance
• Chronic inflammation
• Metabolic health
• Hormonal imbalance
• Immune dysfunction
• Cardiovascular risk
• Fertility
• Mental health
The word “polycystic ovaries” can actually be misleading — many patients with PCOS don’t even have ovarian cysts, while others struggle more with metabolic and inflammatory symptoms than with the ovaries themselves.
The proposed shift to PMOS reflects a growing understanding that this condition is systemic, not simply gynecologic.
For fertility patients, this matters because metabolic and inflammatory health may directly affect:
- egg quality
- implantation
- miscarriage risk
- endometrial receptivity
- pregnancy outcomes
Understanding the full picture to provide better care, earlier intervention, and more personalized support.
Warmly, Nadera
