Did anyone regret staying in dentistry, or regret leaving?
I (33F) am struggling with whether I should continue and finish my dentistry degree, and I would really appreciate honest advice from people who have been in similar situations.
I already completed my bachelor’s in dentistry and have 2 years to go to complete my masters degree and be a dentist. I currently have around €50.000 in studentloan debt (I live in the Netherlands and you pay a small percentage of your income once you start earning, so this debt is not a big concern for me). On paper, finishing seems like the logical choice because dentistry offers financial stability, flexible hours, good income, and job security (and not unimportantly it's AI proof). But mentally, I’ve been struggling for a long time and have 2 years delay so far because of it. I deal with a lot of anxiety, perfectionism, and fear of making mistakes with patients. I also simply don't enjoy the work activities. I found out/got diagnosed with autism as well the last year, which explains a lot of my struggles in this field. The clinical side of dentistry causes me a lot of stress, and instead of becoming more excited over time, I often feel drained and trapped. I keep questioning whether this profession actually fits me as a person.
Part of me thinks just push through, finish the degree, and maybe it gets better once you gain experience. But another part of me is scared that I’m ignoring a deeper mismatch and forcing myself into a career that may damage my mental health long term. It actually already has, but I keep pushing through hoping it will get better. What makes this decision harder is that I don’t really know what realistic alternatives would give similar stability and income. I’m also scared of regretting quitting, and landing in a job that I (also) don't enjoy and making way less money, or doing something I do enjoy but struggling financially, which causes a different kind of stress.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Did things improve after graduation? Or did you eventually realize the career simply wasn’t right for you? I’d really appreciate honest perspectives, especially from people who doubted their path but stayed vs. people who decided to leave.
Thanks a lot for reading:)
