Asparagus Fern very root bound

I have a very old fern that is already in a big pot and is root bound. I would like to repot but cannot go larger. Is it safe to cut off a portion of the root ball, maybe the bottom third and replant back in the same size pot but less crowded? I cannot really go to a larger pot, already can barely move it.
