After working in SEO for a while, here are a few things I wish someone told me earlier:|
- Traffic screenshots impress marketers more than they impress finance teams. One client taught me this. We doubled organic traffic in under a year and barely moved revenue because most of the pages attracting clicks had weak buying intent.
- Publishing more content is not always the answer. At one point we were pushing out content nonstop because every SEO Twitter thread was screaming “content velocity.” Later I realised half the site was overlapping pages competing with each other.
- Technical SEO problems are usually boring; until they destroy your rankings. A bad migration and redirect mistakes cost one project months of recovery time. Since then I check redirects myself before any launch no matter who’s handling dev.
- Google rankings and AI visibility are starting to become separate things. A few months ago I checked whether some local service pages were appearing in ChatGPT or Perplexity results. Some ranked fine on Google but were basically invisible in AI answers because the entities/schema/context were weak.
- Most AI-generated content sounds exactly the same now. You can spot it instantly. generic intros, fake storytelling, zero specificity. The pages still doing well usually have actual experience or opinions added into them.
- Some of the best keyword research still comes from Reddit threads. Not keyword tools. Actual people complaining about real problems.
- Agencies that understand positioning usually outperform agencies just chasing traffic. Worked with a few teams over the years and the better results usually came with teams thinking about narrative and search intent together, not just rankings. Seen that work well from orgs like Siege Media, Animalz, and more recently some GEO focused teams like Rubicly and Omnius
- Rankings fluctuate way more now than they used to. I used to obsess over every movement in Ahrefs. Now I mostly care about longer trends and whether the business metrics are improving.
Would love to know what hard lessons others have learned?
