Backdrop brings animated wallpapers, Lock Screen video support, playlists, and community-driven customization to macOS with a polished native experience optimized for Apple Silicon Macs.

I started my journey into computers with WebTV way back in the ’90s. I moved off of WebTV and onto a Windows box, and as the years went by, I learned to hate every minute of it. When I finally moved to Mac OS X, it was a breath of fresh air. Even after I switched to Mac, I kept a Windows PC around for gaming. After the days of Active Desktop, I stumbled into Wallpaper Engine. As much as I detested Windows, I really enjoyed the video wallpapers that Wallpaper Engine offered.

I searched for years to find the same experience on Mac, but nothing came close. Recently, a lot of developers have been putting out desktop video wallpaper software, and some of it has been very good. One of the ones I have found to be the best is Backdrop.

About Backdrop

Backdrop by Cindori is a native macOS app designed to transform the traditional desktop experience with animated wallpapers, immersive scenes, and dynamic Lock Screen backgrounds. Created for Mac users who value personalization, aesthetics, and polished software experiences, Backdrop combines high-quality visual content with a lightweight Apple-inspired interface optimized for modern Apple Silicon systems.

Cindori is an independent software studio focused on macOS utilities and enhancement tools. Backdrop was built by a longtime Mac developer with more than 13 years of experience creating applications designed to improve and personalize the Mac experience. The app serves as both a live wallpaper engine and a built-in community platform where users can browse, download, and share thousands of curated backdrops without creating an account. Once downloaded, content can also be played offline.

Backdrop is built primarily using SwiftUI alongside AppKit and lower-level macOS APIs for wallpaper rendering, playback, and system integration. The app currently supports macOS 15 and newer, allowing it to take advantage of Apple’s latest SwiftUI improvements and modern design technologies such as Liquid Glass. The integrated community platform is powered by CloudKit, enabling seamless access to shared content while maintaining a streamlined, privacy-focused user experience.

Development on Backdrop began more than three years before its public launch in October 2024. One of the app’s most technically ambitious features, animated Lock Screen wallpapers, required extensive reverse engineering of macOS system architecture to achieve reliable playback across multiple displays. Since launch, Backdrop has continued to receive regular updates focused on performance refinements, community-requested features, and expanding the overall content ecosystem.

Additional features include playlists, favorites, browsing filters, multi-display support, and customizable playback experiences that can be used on the desktop, Lock Screen, or both. Backdrop’s ongoing development is heavily influenced by community feedback through Discord, email support, and an in-app feedback system where users can submit and vote on feature ideas.

Privacy Policy

Backdrop takes a privacy-focused approach by collecting only minimal data required to maintain app stability and improve the overall user experience. According to the developer, the app primarily gathers limited diagnostic information such as crash analytics rather than extensive personal tracking data.

The app’s integrated community platform is powered by CloudKit, allowing users to browse and download backdrops without creating a traditional account or registering through a separate service. Once content has been downloaded, backdrops can also be used offline without requiring a constant internet connection.

The developer emphasizes that Backdrop’s primary focus is content delivery, customization, and performance rather than user tracking or advertising. This lightweight approach aligns with the app’s broader philosophy of providing a streamlined, native macOS experience while minimizing unnecessary data collection.

User Experience

Getting started with Backdrop is surprisingly simple. After installing the app, you just enable BackdropWallpaper under Login Items in macOS System Settings if you want Lock Screen support, and then you’re ready to start browsing wallpapers. The first time you launch the app, it asks you to pick a few styles you’re interested in so it can tailor recommendations to your tastes. You can pick as many or as few as you want, and thankfully, you’re never locked into those choices. Even if you only select a couple of categories, you still have access to the entire wallpaper library.

One of the things I immediately liked about Backdrop was how natural it felt on macOS. A lot of customization apps on Mac feel like ports from Windows or web apps stuffed into a desktop shell, but Backdrop genuinely feels like something Apple could have designed themselves. The interface is clean, responsive, and easy to navigate from the moment you open it. Once you find a wallpaper you like, all you have to do is click “Play Backdrop,” and it instantly becomes active.

Performance was another area where Backdrop impressed me. Animated wallpapers and Lock Screen videos run incredibly smoothly, with no obvious stuttering, lag, or awkward transitions. The motion feels fluid and subtle rather than distracting or overproduced. Even after spending a lot of time switching between different backdrops and playlists, I never ran into any hard starts or abrupt stops in the animations.

I was also curious about how much of an impact animated wallpapers would have on system resources. According to Activity Monitor, Backdrop hovered around 4.5% CPU usage and roughly 204MB of memory usage while running a single backdrop. Surprisingly, enabling playlists didn’t really change those numbers much. During normal use, multitasking, and even gaming sessions, I never noticed Backdrop slowing my system down or getting in the way.

Finding wallpapers is also easy thanks to the built-in search and category system. You can search by keywords or browse through different styles until something catches your attention. The overall quality of the content is excellent, and many of the backdrops feel genuinely unique instead of looking like recycled stock animations. Features like playlists, favorites, and filters make it easy to organize wallpapers and keep your desktop feeling fresh over time.

That said, whether Backdrop feels relaxing or distracting really depends on the wallpaper you choose. Some of the more active animated scenes can pull your attention away from work if there’s too much movement happening on screen. Thankfully, there are plenty of calmer cinematic and ambient options available, and you can always limit playback to the Lock Screen if you prefer a cleaner desktop during the workday.

Conclusion

Backdrop is the closest experience I’ve found to Wallpaper Engine on macOS, but in many ways, it actually feels more refined because it was built specifically for Apple’s ecosystem instead of being adapted from another platform. The app combines beautiful animated wallpapers with a polished native interface, excellent performance, and a strong community-driven platform that keeps the experience feeling fresh over time. For Mac users who have been searching for a high-quality live wallpaper experience without sacrificing performance or native macOS design, Backdrop is one of the best options currently available.
