Liquidate brokerage to pay off student loans?
Hi all,
27M, married, no kids.
Currently have $40k student loans (down from $98k when I graduated ~6 years ago)
My private student loan is at 7.9% interest, originally 66k,refinanced to 240 months at the end of 2023. At that time I could not afford the monthly so I had to consolidate and stretch it out (big regret). Now, I try to put about ~1000-1500 a month to keep knocking down principal. It’s down to just under $40k from the original refinance of $66k.
In the last 2 years I have put away what extra money I had into a brokerage with various ETF’s and mutual funds, which now sits at about $15k. Wondering about trying to fight my high interest rate versus the market average if it’d be more beneficial to liquidate that $15k and put it against my loans. I’m trying to become debt free (other than mortgage with my wife) as fast as possible, but worried about potential growth if I get rid of the brokerage and just keep attacking the student debt separately in hopes to get it finished in the next 2-3 years.
