Is a dive trip to Catalina island/kelp forests worth it?

I'm a tropical only diver with about 400 dives all around South East Asia/Caribbean. I'm going to be in SoCal in July for a week and was wondering if it is worth bringing my dive gear. Are the kelp forests worth it? Is it usually a gamble for good viz?
