Can the S41 be used without the Internet?

We live in the country and our Internet connection is poor. I like the looks of this machine (S41) and I think it would do exactly what I need. But I don't want to purchase one and have it be a paperweight because my Internet went out.

Can I use the S41 and the software without an Internet connection, or is it required at all times?

And is there any other software made by a third party that works with the S41?
