Thermal paste needs to be redone?

Was helping a friend build his first pc. Could not get the AIO to fit onto the processor. Was going nuts until I found out the motherboard had an m2 heatsink that was not compatible and wouldn't fit.

We used thermal paste in an X shape as directed but in our attempts to get the part to fit it sort of smeared. Now have a new heat sink but does the thermal paste need to be redone or is it ok?
