Mosquito Fish Breeding?
Hi there. I am new to the subreddit but not new to aquarium keeping and maintenence. I've got a 20 long that I have set up for bamboo shrimp, once it establishes a bit more. Right now I have a male/female pair of Florida Flagfish (Jordanella floridae). I know they can be a little territorial, but my pair seems to have settled in really well. I've tried tetras (black neons) but haven't had much luck with them, which I know is a common tetra-keeper experience, and I've decided to return to my roots of keeping gambusia. Or, wanting to, at least. I know they do okay in community tanks, and will do better with my flagfish having their own established areas, but have a tendancy to be nippy ESPECIALLY with flowy-finned fish. My eventual addition of bamboo shrimp will most likely not bother them, since they'll stay tucked up against the elaborate perches I've made for their inevitable addition for filter-feeding, but I figured its worth mentioning regardless.
Anyway, I'm getting off track.
I want to keep them - but, I dont want them to breed like crazy. I've only kept them in groups, but its been so long I don't remember if they bred like rabbits or not. Would a same-sex group cause too much tension? Does it matter? Should I just do a group of males and females and hope for the best? Either or, I miss having them and think theyre really entertaining little fish. They have a special place in my heart.
Advice appreciated. Thank you! 🪴
