Online races

Okay, so i love the game, in all aspect, its amazing, even the gacha system is the coolest I've even seen. There one but: I just started the online races and I don't get it.

How come, even if I don't bump into anything, just a clean race, people are still just cruising away and finishing sometimes thousands of meters ahead, how are they that much quicker?
