Prescribed clindamycin for suspected MRSA mastitis. Is there anything else I can do to prevent complications?
Two weeks ago, I was diagnosed with mastitis and prescribed doxycycline. I got better but then it returned. The NP I saw said she was worried it could be MRSA, so she had me stop the doxycycline and prescribed me clindamycin. I should mention here I have a sulfa allergy and she didn’t want to prescribe keflex due to possible adverse reaction when it was administered during my c section. She also said she was worried that Augmentin wouldn’t touch it if the doxycycline didn’t work.
Anyways; she scared me pretty badly about potential antibiotic resistance, MRSA, and then of course, she threw in that clindamycin can put me at risk for c diff.
I’m just trying to quell my anxiety here. What can I actually do to set myself up for success here? Should I be taking a probiotic? Is there anything else I can do? I have twins and I am incredibly sleep deprived, but I am determined not to miss a dose and to try to prioritize rest, even though that is pretty much impossible with twins.
I am 32 years old, 5’6 and 145 pounds, female, currently breastfeeding, eight months postpartum. Last dose of doxycycline was 5 hrs ago and I have not started the clindamycin yet.
