Buying a car out of state?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I haven’t done this before. I am buying a car from a friend that lives in MA but I live in MI. Would it be better for him to transfer the title and for me to register it in MI before I pick up the car or after? How does that work? I want to make sure I can drive it home after picking it up (crossing through multiple states). Thanks!
