am i wrong for having looked through my husband’s phone?
long story short, i found out my husband lied about a lot of things i asked about before we got married. except i only found out by going through his phone after we got married. i found out he was talking to multiple women, including flirting with women he used to talk to for marriage, including an ex who he claims to only have said goodbye to, including a girl he found attractive for years but were “only friends now” but she didn’t know i was engaged to him.
i can never know what was truly said in the latter two conversations, as those are fully deleted. i only found out from context clues and confronting him. he says he isn’t that kind of person anymore (in our marriage) but i feel so betrayed that he did this to me while i was so excited to be married to him for life during our engagement period.
i ended up getting a Muslim therapist and one of the first things she told me was he was allowed to lie about his past (even though i mentioned it was dealbreakers for me). i said i understand he didn’t have to tell me his past sins, but he should’ve walked away when i made it clear i did not want to be married to someone who had done these things.
next my Muslim therapist told me it is haram to snoop or be too curious, so me looking through my husband’s phone was wrong. now i am conflicted because i understand what she means, but he was literally cheating on me. giving other women attention and compliments, not telling some of them he’s set to be married in a few months. i feel so torn, was i really that wrong? should i just let it go? but I am so hurt that he didn’t give me his loyalty during our engagement time period (which was 6 months). i feel so hurt and wronged, but my therapist is telling me i am wrong for looking for it.
i was contemplating divorce for a while, but i do love him. i don’t know what to do, i’d appreciate insight and advice. thank you
