Should I switch my major out of Nuclear?
I just finished up my second year of Nuclear engineering and I’m really considering switching. A lot of my people at my university have internships this summer and I was lucky enough to get one but at a Geotechnical Engineering firm. I had to jump through so many hoops just to get this internship and I feel like being in Nuclear Engineering just isn’t what I really want to do. I started out as Chemical Engineering my first semester then realized I hated chemistry and switched into Nuclear.
When I switched I was told by so many people that nuclear is an emerging field and I’d have lots of opportunities. But when I started looking into internships there’s not much. I applied to 50+ internships all throughout nuclear and mechanical engineering positions and got no interviews. The more I’m around nuclear engineering the less I believe in it. I’ve talked to so many professors and other people in the nuclear industry and honestly it seems bleak.
A lot of nuclear companies have over promised and under delivered on what they’re doing. So I began to look at other fields and eventually I decided to look at civil engineering companies specifically geotech because it seems really interesting to me but then I started applying online for civil internships and got the same results. I was only able to get an internship by finding a list of civil engineering firms that are local and calling over 10 of them before getting an interview and eventually an offer for the summer (note: one other company reached back out to me a couple weeks after calling but at that point I accepted the one I was offered).
I know the money is a little bit less and when I brought it up to my parents they didn’t seem to keen on me switching my major. Honestly with how competitive everything is and engineering becoming who you know not what you know I feel like switching is the best chance I have to land a job once I get out of college considering I have this summer plus 2 more (I’m taking a fifth year) to get experience it’ll make me much more hirable or if I’m lucky and get a return offer it’ll help those chances as well. I’m just not sure because i understand the money aspect of it but I’m also ahead of the 8 ball if I do switch into civil where as nuclear I’m behind the 8 ball if I stay in.
