Wood-Fired Hot Tub: Pros and Cons
I was researching wood-fired hot tubs and came across a breakdown of the upsides and downsides. Thought I’d summarize it in a more for anyone considering one.
👍 Pros
1. Off-grid friendly
No electricity needed for heating, which makes them great for remote cabins, farms or eco setups.
2. Cheaper to run (in some cases)
If you already have access to firewood, ongoing heating costs can be lower than electric or gas tubs.
3. Relaxing experience
People often say the process of lighting a fire and tending it adds to the whole ritual vibe. More hands-on, less automated.
4. Strong heat, natural feel
They can get very hot and hold heat well, giving a more traditional hot soaking experience.
5. Less mechanical complexity
Fewer parts, less that can break (no pumps, heaters, or complicated wiring in many models).
👎 Cons
1. Time to heat
This is the big one. It can take a few hours (sometimes longer) to get to soaking temperature.
2. You have to manage the fire
It’s not a set and forget system. You’ll need to keep feeding and monitoring the fire.
3. Ash and cleaning
Burning wood means ash buildup and more cleanup compared to electric tubs.
4. Water temperature control is trickier
It’s harder to maintain a perfectly stable temperature, you’re basically balancing fire and water constantly.
5. Not always practical in urban areas
Smoke, wood storage and space requirements can make them less ideal for small backyards or strict neighborhoods.
🧠 Bottom line
Wood-fired hot tubs are awesome if you like the ritual, don’t mind extra effort and want something off grid or low tech. But if you want convenience and precise temperature control, an electric hot tub is way easier.
