Where should we draw the line between using AI for learning vs. cheating?

I’ve noticed a lot of confusion around what actually counts as using AI,in school. Some people say it’s fine for brainstorming, outlining, or grammar fixes, while others argue that anything beyond your own writing process is already crossing into cheating.

But the line isn’t clear at all. For example, is it okay to use AI to:

  • generate an outline but write everything yourself?
  • rephrase sentences you already wrote?
  • explain concepts before you write an assignment?
  • check structure and flow?

At what point does AI stop being a learning tool and start replacing the actual learning process?

I’m curious how others define this boundary, especially with different professors having very different expectations.
