Compulsive Mindset Preventing Joy

Seeking Advice

Hello, I'm a 34 year old genderfluid AFAB person from Sweden. I've been properly diagnosed with both autism and AHD for a decade, but I knew I fuctioned differently from others early on. (Also got depression, anxiety and learnt addiction in the mix.) But after years of self-reflection, reading and therapy, I thought I knew most of my neurodivergent quirks.

Only to realize yesterday that I have some pretty severe compulsive thought systems, in lack of a better term. And they very much limit my ability to experience joy.

It's all related to fandom stuff, because stories in general is one of my hyperfixations. I've read and written fanfiction for 20 years and recently gotten into a small fandom group where people are incredibly supportive. I'm gonna need to use an example to explain my problems, so I'm using Star Trek.

Let's say this fandom group are all about the Klingons. It's the main focus, we're all about their culture and characters from that race. We're also very open to different interpretations of the Klingons. However, once someone's pointed out to me that something in an AU I have doesn't line up with Klingon lore, I have to fix it. It has nothing to do with the person who pointed it out, more often than not they love my ideas. It's all in my head.

Unless I find a way to fix the wrinkle, make it compliant with how the characters would act, I can't enjoy my own story anymore. I begin to despise my own characters for breaking the mold. I can't stand the distortion it causes in my own mind.

So my question is this: Do any of you reading this recognize yourselves? Does your own mind tie itself into knots, obsessed with accuracy and keeping things "in character"?

Mine does, and it's awful. It limits my creativity, makes me loathe the things that bring me joy and I don't know how to fix it. And I realize it's always been like this. I'll bring it up in therapy, my poor therapist has learned so much about fandom stuff from me... But I also need to reach out. To feel less broken and alone.

I just want to have fun and distract myself from all the shit causing me stress.
