Is .308 significantly loader than .30-30?
My first ever deer hunting trip last year I took a loaned .30-30 and at the time was afraid to shoot it without hearing protection. I ended up getting one buck and missing another, and the first time I fired it wasn't that bad actually. I had my hoodie up and my ears didn't ring at all after the first shot. Pretty sure I got less hearing damage from that than going to a club or a concert.
Later on I got a couple shots off at another one but was fatigued and made 2 clean misses (we hunt as a party and share tags)
This time I was surrounded by a lot of brush which deflected more of the noise and concussion back at me and not only did my ears ring, but I was kinda dizzy for the next half hour or so... Boy do I wish I could just buy a suppressor.
I was thinking of buying a .308 in stead of my own .30-30 but am afraid the jump in pressure, powder charge, and velocity is gonna be a LOT worse for my hearing if I cant get my earpro on in time. Some sources online say there's upwards of a 10 decibel difference between .308 and .30-30!
Anybody here fire both without hearing protection? Is there a big difference?
