Royal Mail Local Collect hand posted reddit

My friend is posting me a small package but I don't want it delivered to my home address. I've heard you can address it to a Post Office using the Local Collect format, but everything I've seen online is about retailers doing this, not regular people posting through a post box. Has anyone actually done this? Did it work or did it just get returned?
