Opinions on marrying an partner who overstayed their visa
Hello everyone, I don’t really use the internet to find romantic connections, but I met a few couples in person who have had success from a muslim marriage app so I decided to give it a try. I started talking to a guy and things went great. He lives in another state so I tried to get to know him the best I could online. After some months we decided to meet in person to see how everything translates offline. First day goes great with no problem. Second day he tells me that he is overstaying his visa….my immediate reaction was to tell him I’m incredibly disappointed that he held this information from me and that I am uninterested in continuing. He then explained that he wants to be honest about it and with the current situation of our country he felt unsafe telling me this information online and wanted to meet in person to say this so that I can see him in person and decide for myself. He continued to say that if he wanted to just marry someone for papers he could (he has been here for some time), but he wants to find someone he is actually compatible with and loves whether he was in his current situation or not. We continued the rest of my visit with him taking me to his job, prayed Jummah at his usual masjid, I met a family member of his, and saw his general environment. We had a very hard conversation in which he continuously assured me that he was not trying to use me and that he fully respects my choice to not continue if I decide to do so. He expressed that he liked me very much, but there was no pressure at all. This was just a few days ago. The visit is over and although I enjoyed it overall, my guard has been kept up since. I told him that I’ve decided to really slow it down and focus on just continuing to get to know each other better. He fully agreed and we have just been chatting. He paid for everything concerning my visit, so there are no financial losses or anything like that on my end nor has he ever asked me for financial help. He does seem to be a genuine and hardworking person, but there really is no telling and I don’t want to be deceived in the end. I would like to hear from other sisters as I have received very mixed opinions from other women in my life who I have spoken about this with.
Thank you.
