He is confusing me into oblivion

Does anyone else experience this weird dynamic where two people clearly notice each other a lot, but instead of becoming more comfortable, they become more awkward over time?

There’s this guy I know where sometimes we talk super naturally and easily, joke around, make eye contact, etc. But then other times, especially when we’re alone, it suddenly becomes awkward and quiet for no reason. It’s like we’re both overly aware of each other.

What confuses me is that neither of us dislikes the other at all. We actually get along well. But it almost feels like the more familiar we became, the more self-conscious we both got instead of more relaxed.

I also notice he’ll sometimes look at me when I’m not looking, linger nearby, randomly start conversations, etc. But then other times avoid direct eye contact entirely or act weirdly reserved.

Is this usually attraction/nervousness or can two people just accidentally become hyper-aware of each other and start overthinking every interaction?
