Move all time player to a roster

Hi this is my first show game since the ps2 era and I have been wanting to move Ron Santo from the grounbreakers to the cubs in the roster, but it looks like the roster only allows me to swap active players , just wondering if im missing something or will it only work if I create a player from the ground up which I suck at and would like to avoid
