The only meaningful watch collection is the collection that brings you enjoyment. If that ever stops, you should stop this hobby and find another.

If you are buying watches to impress anybody else, you are likely in for disappointment.

If you are buying watches to keep up with the Joneses, same thing. Poor motivation and there is always somebody with a bigger collection.

It has to come down to personal enjoyment.

I’ve put watches away in my collection, likely never to be worn again, because I had one on and while out and about, I looked down and realized I got nothing out of it.

But the watches that bring a smile to my face…

When I have a watch on that brings me joy and a smile. That is what it’s about.

I think this is why my franken builds bring me a certain enjoyment. The hunt: the months long process for finding the parts I want, the eventual build, the long wait for it all to come together, and the expense/commitment. After a lot of time with my watches, I’ve come to realize that I do, in fact, appreciate my franken builds more than a lot of my other watches.

Saw a comment somebody made about my Pepsi that is still under way. The slogan he threw out was, “Built, not bought” and it made me chuckle. Ultimately, my Pepsi will be 100% genuine and a far longer and more interesting journey than simply buying one on the grey market or at an AD.

Recently I’ve really enjoyed my DDF 5168g. It 💯 brings a smile to my face. I love the Jumbo dial, the huge real estate for a 3 hand watch.

And this focus on watches that bring me enjoyment has added 4 Seikos to my collection in the last 12 days. 2 in hand and 2 on the way. The two in hand definitely check the box of bringing me a smile and enjoyment at a simple glance at my wrist. The Seiko green dial with gold accents is really something. I had it on today and found myself really enjoying the dial and color.

And that is what it is really all about. I don’t care how much a watch costs, or how little. I don’t care if it’s a replica, a genuine luxury brand, an entry brand or a micro brand. May the watch on your wrist bring a smile to your face!
