Is This Problematic? Question for BIPOC
Tagged NSFW just in case this is problematic.
I'm writing a novel. I've finished the first draft and I'm coming up on finishing the second draft. I was thinking about my characters when I came upon a realization... It might be problematic.
I am a white male. My main character is a white male. The love interest of the main character is a black male that dies within the first 1/4 of the book. The best friend of the main character is a mixed female, her mother is black and died when she was young, her father is white and is the main antagonist. The friend dies at the end of the book. There is a "teacher" figure for the main character, a Spanish woman that will die in book 2 (if I ever get that far).
There are other minor characters of varying races throughout the story.
I'm not saying the characters are dying because they are POC, but basically all the important characters that aren't white... Are going to die, except in book 3 the main character will be a Hispanic male and will be quite badass.
I could change the races of course, but then I feel like I'd be whitewashing my story a bit.
Thoughts? Any advice is welcome. Thank you in advance!
