What dog breeds actually do well in Manhattan apartments?

After checking out some of the smaller breeds listed on Silver Nickel Puppies, I started wondering which dogs truly adapt well to apartment living in NYC.

Are smaller breeds always better, or have you seen bigger dogs thrive in the city too?
What breeds would you recommend and which ones would you avoid for a busy, crowded environment like Manhattan?
