Wasn’t there for me but is now there for anybody
I (25F) was born with druggie teenage parents - had to grow up with them, causing major emotional damage, but always had food on the table, etc. They got their financial stuff together as I grew up but never seemed to mature very much.
What really irks me is that while I was in high school, my mom started doing a “Brothers and Sisters” sort of program. She would incessantly tell me about these dire situations, and how she was able to help these kids. Awesome, am proud of her for that. It still hurt to hear her seemingly care and give time to these kids more than she did me, but I tried to get over it.
She called me one day, after I went off to college, to vent about a young family friend’s situation. This girl was from an alright family, but was self harming. I was doing the same thing at that age, and was told by my parents that I was crazy, scoffed at, made to feel embarrassed. No measures were taken to see where I felt bad or what was wrong. Now, with this random girl, there’s immense sympathy and worry. And it felt like my mom’s care for this girl was being rubbed in my face.
She takes this girl out to nice lunches all
the time — something I never experienced with my own mother. This random girl deserves more sympathy and care than me, I suppose. It doesn’t matter if I was hurting myself, but it’s the end of the world if this girl feels bad whatsoever.
Just needed to vent. Am getting to a point where I think I’d like to cut my parents off and this is certainly a large piece of my reasoning… they’ve also given me a number of broken promises, and unresolved trauma, but this piece hits heavy. Open to any input.
