Organizing tools, parts, & hardware

How do you organize the sort of stuff you get from a hardware store? Hand tools aren't as difficult as... just all these parts and miscellaneous hardware. When I looked for ideas online, I mostly found tool chests on casters. That doesn't help, because without a way to categorize the different things, all these drawers are just spaces for introducing more disorganization. So what's a good way to categorize hardware store items *that works for the average household*?

I added a restrictive clause because an obvious classification method is just to duplicate what hardware stores do, but for the average household that's not practical.
