Roommate’s girlfriend wants to move in for June. I said no and he won’t drop it.

Discussion

How do I handle a roommate who wants his girlfriend living with us for a full month and wants me to extend the lease?

Looking for honest advice, not just validation.

Lease ends in July. Roommate's visa fell through, he leaves in August, and he wants me to (a) extend the lease by one month so he can stay through August, and (b) let his girlfriend live in the apartment for all of June.

The girlfriend part isn't about her personally. She's been coming over most weekends for the last year and a half and that's been fine. A full month with three people in a 2BR is what I'm not okay with, especially with everything she'd be moving in.

When he first asked about extending, I said I needed time. He pressed me on the day of one of my company's three recent layoff rounds and I said "whatever you want is fine" just to end the conversation. The next day I tried to give him a soft no by saying my parents would be visiting, hoping he'd take the hint. He didn't. He kept probing, even offering "if your parents come, I'll move out for the month so I don't pay rent." He wanted explicit, so I gave him explicit: not comfortable with the month-long stay. That's when he turned confrontational, calling me cheap and sending things like "if it was about money you could've just said that, I would've paid more. If she did something or you had insecurities we could've had a civil conversation. I didn't expect to get played cheap."

Why I'm out of patience after two years:

- He uses my furniture and kitchenware like it's communal.
- He's broken some of my utensils, hidden them, and never said anything. I figured it out on my own.
- He's had the only parking spot the entire two years (we were supposed to swap rooms, never did).
- Rent is late every month, every month I have to chase him.
- He only cleans when his girlfriend is over.

Questions I'm sitting with:

  1. How do I hold the line on both requests without making the last two months unbearable?
  2. Is it reasonable to refuse the lease extension and let him figure out August on his own?
  3. How do I stop feeling guilty about the visa angle when the rest of this has been so lopsided?
