Question about visiting Indiana

I'd like to eventually visit GenCon, as I enjoy tabletop gaming. But I have a family member who has always insisted Indiana has a large, passionate Neo-Nazi/KKK population, and that as a Jewish person, I would get shot on-site if I visited/moved there, and ever did anything even 'coded' as Jewish.

Is there any truth to this, and if so, does someone have tips on staying safe?
