15 Years in Backend Development, but Freelance Outreach Is Going Nowhere — Looking for Honest Feedback
Hey everyone,
I’m a backend/full-stack developer with ~15 years of experience, mainly working with PHP (CodeIgniter/Laravel), Node.js, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, RabbitMQ, AWS, and TypeScript. Most of my recent work has been around large-scale ecommerce/dropshipping systems, API-heavy platforms, queue-based processing, database optimization, and multi-tenant architectures.
For the last 6 months, I’ve been trying to shift more aggressively into freelance/contract work, but honestly, I feel like I’ve hit a wall.
My current approach has mostly been:
- Applying through LinkedIn/remote job portals
- Cold outreach to founders/CTOs
- Updating portfolio/resume repeatedly
- Sending tailored proposals instead of copy-paste pitches
But the pattern has been frustratingly consistent:
- Very low response rates
- “We’re not hiring contractors right now”
- Conversations dying after initial interest
- Competing against extremely low-cost bids on platforms
What I’m trying to figure out is whether my positioning itself is wrong.
For example:
- Am I presenting myself too much as a “general senior developer” instead of attaching myself to one painful business problem?
- Do clients respond better to niche messaging like:
- “I optimize slow Node/MySQL systems handling millions of records”
- “I help ecommerce platforms reduce infrastructure cost and DB bottlenecks”
- “I build scalable queue/event-driven backend systems” instead of just listing technologies?
I’d also really like perspective from people currently getting consistent freelance work:
- Are cold LinkedIn DMs still effective in 2026, or mostly ignored now?
- Did networking/agency partnerships/subcontracting work better for you than Upwork/job boards?
- How did you get your first few clients after a long dry spell?
- Are companies still hiring experienced independent developers directly, or mostly looking for full agencies now?
I’m open to completely rebuilding my approach at this point, because repeating the same strategy for months clearly isn’t producing results.
Would genuinely appreciate practical advice from people who’ve managed to break through recently.
