HCMC or Hanoi better for first-time travelers?

Has anyone recently visited Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City?

A lot of travelers don't have time to explore all of the main cities, so their trips are sometimes limited to just the north, the central, the south, or some combination.

Which city would you say is better for a first-time visitor if they could only visit one of these major cities?
