15 year old daughter just told me she thinks she likes girls too
My 15 year old daughter came to me tonight and told me she thinks she likes girls and has a crush on another girl at school that she’s been exploring recently. I told her I loved her and thanked her for trusting me and I truly meant that.
But internally I feel like I’m struggling to process everything and I’m hoping to hear from other parents who have been through something similar.
Part of what’s throwing me is that she spent the last year planning to move to her dad’s for the next school year and then just 2 days ago suddenly told me she doesn’t want to move anymore. Now this conversation happened too so I can’t help but wonder if the two are connected somehow even though she swears this crush has nothing to do with her changing her mind and she just doesn’t want to leave her life here.
She also asked me not to tell anyone yet including her dad or my husband and I’m trying to respect that while also feeling a little overwhelmed carrying this alone. She told me that I’m the only family she feels comfortable talking to about this because she thinks I’m the only one that won’t look at her any differently or judge her. I’m not fearful for her safety so I will respect her wishes and let her be the one to decide when she’s ready to share this news with others but wow - that’s a big one to hide from your husband. We tell each other everything.
I guess I’m just looking for perspective from parents who have navigated this before. What helped? What do you wish you had done differently? How did you balance giving your child privacy while also processing your own emotions? Any advice?
