OK. I just rented my first place alone after living with roommates for a few years. Finished a PhD and now in a postdoc away from hubby and it sucks. OK first, I find this place on Facebook from another person’s post the landlord responded it was $1000. So i followed up to see if it was available showed me pictures and such. I asked if any furniture was available and he said tv and couch all good. Proceeded to tell me internet could be added for $80. Ok whatever I’m pretty desperate and I have six small/medium parrots (I study them and yes also a bit crazy lol) so beggars cannot be choosers. So he says rent is $1100 and I say eventually ok you told the other guy $1000 so can we do $1100 including internet. Ok yes. He’s busy but I’m away and not a big deal. Eventually sign the lease. Move forward to being back in town and start moving. A few things going on as expected it looks newly renovated so not unexpected. Dishwasher disposal not working, screens, cabinet door top screw cracked board so hanging on one screw when open. Nothing major. Ok so it takes me a week to move in after that. I’ve now been here another week and no tv or couch and no internet and no maintenance. Only annoying thing was disposal really because it was backing up a bit and I don’t want it to smell. Then he’s like what internet so we had to go through that. I sometimes work from home so I’m using my phone now. I ended up getting a couch myself but I really could use a tv. Very mildly annoying no big deal. BUT THEN today we have one of those southern rain storms and I walk into the kitchen and my feet are IN WATER. I’m like fuck what did I do look around to see if I left anything on ant and then look outside/think of the layout of the the property and Patrick Starr lightbulb goes on it’s flooding. I realize the place has just been renovated and immediately ring the landlord as specified for emergencies and he picks up. I explain the situation I’ve got all my brand new towels down. Nothing much we can do at that moment but wait for the storm to pass keep him posted. First Texas storm since they’ve had the property and sucks they might have to dig a drainage ditch. I offer to check the unoccupied unit next door to which he said he would appreciate. OK. Frustrated and concerning but kind of causally like he’s not sure his maintenance people are open this weekend. No offer fans or dehumidifier etc. so I look it up and recommendations is to turn a/c down to 68-72 turn on all fans. I go next door and also flooded but not as bad. So I turn the ac down get all the fans on and flip couch in there on feet so it doesn’t get wet if it gets that bad. Then I go back to my place and the water is slowing down and receding. Still nothing from landlord but keeping updated via text. Ok. Go to wash dry my new towels etc and the washer and dryer are not connected !! LOL great! Ok so I’m like maybe next door. Ask permission to use them which is granted but he’s not sure they are connected either. Ok yes connected. I double checked the vent all new and good. Drag my 6 sopping wet towels and other things over there in my new trash can! Still nothing from landlord. It’s pretty swampy and my mind immediately goes “Shit! MOLD!”… if you know anything about birds you know they absolutely cannot tolerate crap in the air (this is why we used to use canaries in coal mines). And also newly redone so thinking about the property as well. I’m trying to clean up and is 8:30 on a Saturday and I realize I probably need a dehumidifier which I have at home but not one here at the new place. Fuck. Well, Door Dash it is! I tell the landlord I got it and I’ll run it here and then next door… still nothing. Go back to the other unit to check on the towels drying. They are making progress but I’m thinking I should wash them while I’m at it. Open the washer and it’s FULL of black mold!!!! just kidding I’ll just dry my shit and wash later…. I had to apologize to my dasher because my porch light is dead (weird one that doesn’t have a bulb you replace?) and I’m not trying to be rude. So thing gets here and set it up. Open cabinets to air them out where water was coming from. I realize in that moment oh sometimes the disposal has a switch! Flip the reset and sure enough it hums but absolute NASTY FOUL GRIME comes up in protest. Immediately look it up and you need a hex key to spin the damn thing. LUCKY me I just set up parrot cages which always require hex keys and it one of two tools I have. Give it a go and voila! I fixed the jam myself so landlord didn’t have to have maintenance guy do it. Yay proud of myself. Anyway, all this while dealing with COVID with bad GI symptoms- sorry TMI! I hope y’all have a better memorial Memorial Day weekend than me!!! Attached is a picture of one of my parrots doing her best impression of Darth Vader!!! 😂

Am I being PITA? Plus flooding!
