Confusing Magician Interaction

Sorry for the noob question, I did not see an immediate answer to this online.

I had a Delphox (no mega) with Magician and no item hit a Meowscarada with Flamethrower. Meowscarada had a focus sash which proced to save it at one hp. But Delphox never got the item.

I would guess that focus sash procs before the ability in this case? Is focus sash "used up" at this point which prevents it from being transferred?
