RG34XXSP D-Pad Issues

Recently purchased a new RG34xxsp.

Have noticed when playing Mario kart and trying to power slide, rocking right to left on the d pad, the d-pad continues moving left when I’m pushing right on the D-pad.

Is this a skill issue on my part?
Hardware faulty?

Running stock OS. Occurs in Mario kart NDS and Mario Kart GB.
