Cartridge box detail question.

Work In Progress

I do Rev War stuff, fairly new to it (8 months). I have a leather cartridge box. Problem is it seems EVERYONE at every event has the same one from same company! I portray a member of the militia, so I figured each persons kit would be individualized and personalized. One guy has LIBERTY embroidered on his haversack. Im not into sewing, so. But....

Id like to personalize it, by maybe adding a design via a leather stamp with a stamp/punch and a hammer. My question is was that done back then? were there specific designs or tools they used? Id rather not use 20th C designs etc... Everything I look up seems to be 19th C.

I dont want to ruin the cartridge box with an incorrect design that everyone will say, 'Cool design. You do know thats not era appropriate, right?' Theyre expensive to buy.

What do you all think? Just do what I think is cool, or not do it bc its not appropriate. Should I figure out a different way to do it, say, by using a flat nail and make a 'dot' design, or burn something into it?

thoughts?

btw, the design I was thinking of was like a fan or a small leaf pattern around the edge of the flap, not letters or numbers.

TIA.
