How to Start and Carry a Conversation (Part 2)
Once the initial icebreaker is over, how do you actually keep the conversation moving without running out of things to say?
Carrying a conversation isn’t about being interesting—it’s about being curious and sharing that curiosity with the other person.
Here is how you keep the momentum going:
1. Use the "Echo & Expand" Trick (Paraphrasing)
When the other person is talking, don't just wait for your turn to speak. Listen for their main points. When they finish, take a small piece of what they just said, repeat it back to them in your own words, and then add your own quick thought to it.
For example, if they say: "I spent the whole weekend trying to fix my backyard, it was exhausting."
You can say: "Man, a weekend of yard work sounds intense. I usually can barely handle just watering my apartment plants before I call it a day."
2. Dig Deeper with "Why" and "How"
If the conversation starts to stall, avoid asking questions that can be answered with a simple "yes" or "no"—or use those short answers as a bridge. Ask questions that invite them to tell a story or share an opinion.
Using the Bridge: If you ask, "Do you like your job?" you can use whatever they say next to build a bridge.
If they say yes, follow up with: "How do you like to get your job done?" or "What's your favorite part about it?"
If they say no, follow up with: "What makes you dislike it?" or "Are you looking for other job opportunities?" - it serves as a second bridge.
Direct Route: Or, skip the yes/no completely and ask: "How did you end up getting into that line of work?"
3. Share the Lead of the Conversation
A great conversation feels like a game of catch, not a monologue. Once you share a quick story or a perspective of your own, always remember to pass the torch back to them.
Never leave a thought hanging in mid-air. End your thought with a simple, friendly question like, "What about you?" or "Have you ever experienced something like that?" This takes the pressure off you and gives them a clear, easy invitation to start talking again.
