I learnt how to sing using ChatGPT for the past 2 months and I think it's been quite helpful (no singing experience or teaching + recording included + want honest feedback asw )
Hey everyone, first time poster here just wanting to share my singing journey, I have listened to music all my life but it was only a few months ago that I wanted to take it more seriously, I think I've always had pretty good instincts for music and delivery, but have never actually had any singing or musical experience, be it choir, learning an instrument, performing, etc.
I'm a 20 year old university student so can't really afford to take singing lessons which are quite expensive so I have resorted to experimenting with generative AIs (mostly chatgpt but a bit of claude and gemini as well), attaching sound recordings and having them analyze my voice, obviously I know they aren't able to actually tell whether I sound good but I think they can for the most part accurately gauge whether I am on pitch, am stable, if i have good timing, etc.
Throughout my conversatons, it has helped me identify that I am probably a tenor with a lighter leaning voice and find songs and singers that match and compliment my vocal profile, given general but still very helpful advice like: what chest voice, head voice, mix voice, falsetto is, their differences and how to execute them, whether a certain song or part should be sung with more chest connection, head voice, etc in a very understandable and executable way, help me realise what proper singing technique is or should feel like: that it should feel effortless, not strained, more cognitively demanding than physical, etc. It has even helped me find my natural voice where I can distinguish between what sounds good in my head and what actually sounds good to others or in recordings when a month ago I didn't realise I was singing in a higher voice which made me sound hollow, thin, airy and cold, teaching me about chest connection, engaging with my body like an instrument.
Technique is probably far from perfect, I can definitely notice that my breath control is lacking, and it sounds a bit shaky. I also was having a bit of fun recording this but I am fairly confident that I sound relatively clear, tonally consistent and overall executed the part pretty well for a casual beginner.
I know a lot of people are quite hostile and feel quite negative against ai, and it probably still isn't a replacement for an actual teacher, but for on demand, specific and directly relevant feedback within a given context, that is also free, I can't think of anything else that can do what it does.
Perhaps I would have had similar or better results, researching, reading articles, books, watching videos, or learning in a more conventional manner. But I think this was a pretty fun and interesting experiment that may be helpful for some.
Any questions or advice are welcome of course, am willing to record or share more if any are interested.
