I (27M) will be commuting weekly to see my girlfriend (28F)
My girlfriend recently took up a job in London while I’m based in Scotland (400+ miles away). Because of my training contract, we’ll be doing long distance for the next two years, with me travelling down weekly to see her.
We’ve been disagreeing quite a lot about where she should live in London.
Option A would mean:
- My total weekly commuting time (including work + travelling to see her) would be around 15h 20m per week, with about 10 hours of that being the London travel.
- Her weekly commute would be around 7h 30m, although for about 3 months of the year it would rise to around 12h 30m.
Option B would mean:
- My total weekly commute would increase to around 18h 20m.
- Her weekly commute would drop to around 3h 20m, with the same 3-month period at around 12h 30m.
For context, she also works occasional 12-hour shifts every couple of weeks.
I completely understand that she’s the one living there full-time, so naturally her day-to-day commute matters a lot. At the same time, I’ll be travelling down every week after work on Thursdays and back on Sundays, paying for the travel and adding a significant amount of commuting onto my own week.
What upset me most is that after we viewed both locations together yesterday, I woke up this morning to find out she had already put an offer in on Option B without discussing it with me first.
I’m struggling to work out how couples should balance sacrifices in long-distance situations like this, especially when one person’s decision materially affects the other person’s weekly routine and workload.
How would you approach this conversation constructively without it becoming a resentment issue long term?
