Two years past my FIRE number and still showing up to work. Here’s the honest reason why and how I finally got out

Okay so I’ve been lurking here long enough to know that a lot of people in this sub have the math figured out. SWR, asset allocation, the whole thing. That wasn’t my problem either.

My problem was that I kept finding reasons to stay. “One more year” twice over. And I genuinely couldn’t explain why, which was the annoying part.

So I started trying to untangle it. What I landed on, I’m calling the Decoupling Framework, sounds fancier than it is, but the name actually describes exactly what it does: you figure out everything your job is quietly doing for you, and you detach those things from the job, one by one. That’s it.

Sharing it here because maybe someone else is stuck in the same weird place.

Step 0 — Inventory everything the job is giving you

Not just the salary. The structure, the social contact, the status, the sense of purpose, the identity. Write it all down. You can’t decouple what you haven’t named — and most of us have been treating “the job” as one big scary thing instead of a bundle of seven smaller, solvable ones.

Step 1 — Which of these is actually keeping you?

Be honest. For me it was financial security and routine except that hadn’t been true for a while. Old wiring I hadn’t updated.

Step 2 — Rank them, then decouple one at a time

Start at the top. Replace each thing from somewhere outside the job. Build the social life. Build the routine. Remove each reason the job has a grip on you, one by one. It’s slow. Worth it.

Step 3 — Build your identity outside the job deliberately

Just make it intentional. You’re not filling time, you’re building the version of yourself that doesn’t need the title.

Somewhere in this process the noise just stopped. The decision that felt terrifying for two years became kind of obvious. Almost monk like clarity, if that doesn’t sound too dramatic.

We give our jobs more credit than they deserve and let them define us long after they should. That’s the friction. The Decoupling Framework is just a way to finally see it.

Putting it out there, take what’s useful. Curious if anyone else has been through this.
