How do you decide if surgery is worth it?
23 year old guy. I was born with a golf ball sized bald patch near my crown. I've had two hair transplants, but the density is still lower. I would like to increase the density, but some people tell me it just looks like a cowlick/whorl that everyone has. Others online have said it looks like a minor scar or something, but no one irl really notices, especially if my hair isn't short. But it's always in the back of my mind, knowing that I have a patch of low density in an area I've been self conscious about since I was 8 or 9. I would like the option of having short hair, like a buzz cut, without worrying about it being noticeable. I've had a few buzz cuts since my transplants, but the last one was when I noticed that the area is more noticeable than I had thought. Still, no one has commented on it.
I consulted with a reputable transplant surgeon, and he recommended scalp micropigmentation (SMP), and then a transplant after if I wasn't satisfied. Since this is one of the most recommended surgeons (I want the best outcome), the minimum surgery price is around £4500, compared to £400 for SMP. But I don't really like the idea of SMP, which is essentially just tattooed dots to give an illusion of density, compared to actual hairs from a transplant. If I got SMP first, I wouldn't be able to get the transplant for another 14 months, as I will be very far away.
The area has improved massively since before my transplants. Now it's something that people don't even really notice or see as abnormal. But it still bugs me, and can be improved. I have over £95k, so £4500 isn't a huge dent, but it's still a decent chunk of money, and my money is mostly from saving and inheritance, so I'm not earning a lot.
I suppose this applies to many surgeries. How do you decide whether something is actually worth the money, or is just you worrying/hyper fixating/wanting to get surgery to forget about it? I used to have very low self esteem, and wanted every facial surgery in the book, but now this is really the only thing that bugs me.
