better way to respond to parents saying they want to move back into their house?

Without getting into all the details: My parents both had serious accidents in their home recently. Both were in the hospital, then rehab. Now they are together at a very very nice assisted living place that they have agreed to stay in for at least three months.

The problem is that they keep talking about how they plan to move back into the house. The house that has been unsafe for them - where they had their falls. Neither one of them is able to live independently at this point, let alone be a caregiver for the other.

My sibling and I are the ones who have handled everything that needs handling during this extremely stressful time - and are still doing it. It's so much. I'm not local - I've been flying back and forth. My sibling lives about an hour away with two little kids and has been driving back and forth. We're exhausted, we're stressed. We are past the crisis part of this - I think - but there is still so, so much to do.

For years we begged our parents to move to a one-floor condo or to build a bedroom on the first floor of their house (which is just trip hazard city, between the stairs and a thousand throw rugs everywhere). They never thought this was important - never mind that Mom has Parkinson's and osteoporosis and both are in their 80s. We kept emphasizing that they could make choices while they were fully able, and get exactly what they wanted - or wait until there was a crisis, and have whatever choices were available then. They chose the latter.

But they will not stop talking about moving back into the house. They think they can build a bedroom on the first floor, move the washing machine to the first floor, redo the bathroom, hire people to take care of them - and never mind that the two of them can't even figure out how to make a phone call right now. I guess they think the magic construction fairy will wave a wand and make this happen.

I'm visiting right now, and it's been another stressful week - but also I am just so glad to spend time with my parents, and so grateful that this isn't worse. But meanwhile I've discovered that their house has mice - one more thing my sibling and I have to take care of. And the mice are living in the garbage they've been keeping in their kitchen cabinets and in the basement.

I've asked them to pause talking about the house - I told them that I am at the end of my tether and need to get on top of what is happening more before I can even talk with them about where they are going next. I suggested they do some research about other living situations if they want - independent living, if they want, other ALFs, even construction companies and caregivers. But that I am not ready to talk about any of this while we are still so early in all of this, and I am still trying to get my dad into a doctor for his broken back because for some reason the osteo he's seen will only deal with his broken hip.

But last night after dinner - the food at the ALF is good at least! - my mom started up again. And I lost it, in a very very ugly way. You really don't know what shame is until you've yelled at your 80-something year old mother in an assisted living home.

I don't want to extinguish their hope - I don't want to be a jerk. I also am apparently furious that we are in this situation because they were living in this house, and I don't have it in me to have a lighthearted conversation about it right now. Not while we're still having to do so much.

Given that it is inevitable they will bring up going home again - and given how raw I seem to be - what is the right way to respond next time?

Thanks for reading my novel and oy, oy.
