CT2 to ST3 visa logistics with gap between programmes — anyone been through this?
Hi everyone!
I’m currently a Core Surgical Trainee in the UK on a Tier 2/Skilled Worker visa. My CST programme finishes in August 2026 and my current visa expires on 20th August 2026.
I’ve accepted an ST3 post starting in October 2026, so there’s a gap of around 6–7 weeks between training programmes. I recently applied for my CoS through NHS England, and the latest update on the portal says: “CoS type updated to SIC due to gap between training programmes.”
Does anyone know what “SIC” means in this context, or what implications this has for the CoS/visa process?
Also, for anyone who has gone through a similar situation with a gap between training posts:
- How long did it take for your CoS to be approved/issued?
- Did the gap affect travel plans at all?
- Any and all gap plans are truly appreciated - Not sure if I will ever get this long of a gap in my professional career
I’m hoping to do some travelling during the time between CST and ST3, so just trying to work out the logistics/timeline realistically.
Would really appreciate any advice or shared experiences - thanks in advance!
